found this today. appears to be a lid of somesort, registers $1 in silver range at all discrimination levels(very new to this so taking that lightly). Any help is appreciated. On the left is what seems to be part of a hinge(top view) bottom view is the number 7 at the same spot. My wishful thinking is jewelry box lid, if I am correct my rear will be back there A.S.A.P(but once again I am a newbie so I am most likely way off). Oh one more note the grooved inner part is raised about an inch from the outer rim.[/img

I added the 2 profile images on the left side of the first of them you can see the part of what I believe to be a hinge or something like it.

Re: lid or similar of some sort....

5"*2 1/2 " it weighs about 2 lbs. solid, the mid section is raised about an inch.

I'm going to take another picture or so to show the profile a little better.

And Monty I'm new to relic hunting, not life, if I felt it even resembled a sardine lid I would have chucked it out of frustration :D

LOL! Touchè.

Lid to a butter dish or sugar server? Could well be silver.

how would I go about finding the age of this? I found it where I have found an old found an old buried foundation. My great Uncle owns the property, his Uncle built his house in the early 1800's, they know nothing of a building ever being there( I have dug down and found foundation) so it is definitely something not just a dump site.

I'm sorry I guess I'm a little new to say something like that and have people know my intentions. After 2 such replies I shall apologize. It was in jest, yes without the profile pic it does appear sardinish....

How about the lid to an old coffee mill/grinder . There were hundreds of different styles and sizes . Have you checked it with a magnet ?

Newbie learns something....or memory is jogged. A magnet what a great idea LOL.

Ok it is not silver, but this baffles me even more, I have compared it to other finds, metals etc. with detector, in the most discriminating mode, this is the only one that even registers, not to mention the only one that holds true to the level at which it reads on all modes, here are my comparisons..steel,iron,cast iron, tin, hammered tin.

Would silver plating result in this(this would seriously modernize the piece)

If it was a two lb. lid off a sardine can I'd keep it! That's one dang big sardine! Wasn't trying to be a smart$$ just needed some point of reference for the size. Let me see....maybe it's the lid off a coffee mill? Oh darn! Someone already said that! ;) M ;D nty
