Hi all,

It's been a while since I've been out. I went to a field behind Joe's house here in town. I gained permission last weekend and he invited me to 'come back anytime'. I thought that I would go out for a couple of hours before dark last night. Within an 1.5 hours I found two very nice colonial flat buttons, one large flower design with a rimmed edge. Also found was a well worn and believed by me to be a Liberty Cap variety or Draped Bust large copper penny. This one is very interesting such that someone started to cut it probably with wire or something similar. I wish it was just a bit nicer so as to see the date on it. Check out the pictures, I put one from the coin facts website for comparison. I think it is a Liberty Cap but maybe it's Draped Bust in disguise. I am quite pleased with it just the same.

Great find...keeps me thinking one day I might run across one ....wtg

Nice find. Can you see a date. Use the heated peroxide. If you look at my before and after pics of my "Vermontensium" copper you'll see the difference. You may get a date off it after the treatment. It also helps weeting it, looking under light, tipping the coin. GOOD LUCK and C :thumbsup:ongrats........Hogge

That's Awesome Ed....Definetly on my "wish list".Congratulation's on a nice find

Ed, sweet coppa, buddy. There should be more of those buggards waiting there.

congrats on the awesome oldie my friend.... the cut mark.... I have found 2 cut LC's this yr...... one was cut in half exactly.. the other was a quarter cut..... very cool to find...... yours was just started to be cut... if you have to have a mark on it... better the type you have then the dandy digger marks so many of us inflict upon our finds LOL..... congrats on a sweet dig my friend! I sent alot of my coppers to a guy from here to clean with electrolosis for me.... he could most likely get you a date from yours......... he got me dates on all of mine... the one I have was a totally smooth disc,,, he didnt get a date on it.. but told me it was def a KGII copper cent.. 1725-1760....... I can get you his info if you want.. just IM me

Nice large cent. You could also try taking a pencil rubbing of the coin to see if a date is there. I tried it once with a draped bust cent that I couldn't read the last digit on and it came out quite clear in the rubbing. It was a 1797.

Thank you everyone

Hi all,

I would like to thank you all for your awesome replies to my post. I am happy that you all agree on a Draped Bust. The best part of this one is the unique cut mark that someone started. It is on both sides of the coin too. I'm guessing some sort of wire. I find it interesting that copper was cut as well as silver back then. I did try hot peroxide and a coin rubbing but no luck on the date. I don't like to work too much off of the coin because quite often the green vertigree is the only thing that keeps the faint details in tact. Thanks again and good luck to all on your large copper adventures ;D
