Well, there probably is a cave in Old Mexico with gold in it, so the spirit didn't lie. Does spirit of a friend mean a dead friend or was this an out of body exerience?
Maybe the friend had an eye on his wife and hatched a scheme to send the guy on a wild goose chase. Followed him, hid in a closet or attic until midnight.
