Relic Hunting
So, just got into hunting artifacts and I've had a pretty good go at it. However, I'm beginning to look at other places to hunt for a different variety of material. I've done a bunch of reading on various forums and I just wanted to know what you guys and gals thought. Now, I live in South Alabama where the terrain is relatively flat. I know the obvious is to look for areas near water. However, I'm confused as far as what I'm looking for in relation to the water with regards to terrain. I've got a friend that plows a 40+/- acre field in the middle of about 5 natural ponds. One of them being a spring fed pond about 60+ acres big with the others ranging from an acre to 10 acres. I know the area immediately around the large pond has yielded artifacts, however I can't get permission to hunt around that pond. But, his land is about half a mile from the ponds, sits 50 to 75 feet higher than those ponds, and is one of the highest places in that area according to a topo map. Assuming those ponds have been there for a really, really long time, would it be a likely area to find artifacts? If not, could someone point me in the right direction on what to look for on topo maps. Thank you guys for any help!

The high ground nearby would be a good area to hunt.

Agree with what's been said... I ran into a guy years ago that had quite an impressive relic collection and he said to always start on the high ground because the inhabitants wouldn't stay on the lower ground due to flooding.

Remember they always camped close to water, a mile from water would not be good for the women. Any running water areas especially springs are great areas as springs are constant fresh water.

Thank you guys for the replies! I figured it would be a good spot but I'm not to big to ask for some advice. When they plow it in the spring, I will be sure to get up there!

Another possible site to search is the downward side of any elevated terrain that protect a site from prevailing winds, usually towards the south and east.

People are creatures of habit, they tend to do same then and now. If you were to move to that property, where would you put your house knowing you may have extremely cold winters, need a place to get your water from, and as said risk of floods. where would be the best place to plant? Sun direction etc. put yourself in their shoes. become them. where were the roads coming in and out, heading to the next town? People back then had to think more about survival than whats the newest cell phone coming out this year. Should be records where people purchased their land and built houses, ranches etc. Keep searching, that's the fun part when it all comes together and you find what your looking for. Happy Hunting.
