Well spring of sorts has come to Western PA so I decided it was time to leave the safety of my yard and take my DFX on the road. My target was a decent sized local lake/park. I had spoke to my barber yesterday and told him I was thinking of going to the park to hunt and he told me that he walks his dog there and sees others hunting there every so often. I thought this was good and bad as this tells me that most likely the Park service doesn't have a problem with detecting, but that the park is well hunted. Off I went.
I arrived and hiked a bit to one of the further points of the park where a volleyball court sits. Just want to take the time to say the hike made me glad I ordered one of those backpack type carry-alls from Jimmy Sierra. I had bought it with a few more remote locals my brother and I have in mind but it's great for walking distances with all your gear. Anyway, I thought surely the volleyball area would have been hunted, as a noob even I figured things are going to get lost here. It seemed like a good place to start. I went with the stock coil and jewelry/coins program. Almost instantly I got a good tone on a target that turned out to be a dime. It was then I noticed that the "grass" was really mostly matted down weeds and directly below it was sand. Six or so inches down from that was a sheet of plastic that i figured was put there to retard growth and then clay. The dime was at 5.5".
I have to say the SignaGraph feature of the DFX is awesome. I had plenty of practice digging junk in my yard to just go my Graph alone and feel pretty comfortable passing things over I feel is trash. Only twice did I dig knowing I was probably going after foil and both times I ended up with a small piece of a soda can.
All in all in the three hours I was there hunting a 70'x70' area I found 75 cents in clad (2 quarters, 1 dime, 2 nickles. and 5 pennies) Nothing too special about them although some of the pennies were barely recognizable. I with more confidence about using the DFX, A much better understanding of some things I was having trouble wrapping my brain around in Jeff Fosters book, a strong feeling about getting back there to the area around the soccer field, in agreement that no place is really ever "hunted out", and a happiness knowing that with just 1261 days like today and my DFX will have paid for itself!

P.S. Finds ranged from 2.5" to 6.5" Also can't believe how fast the time goes. Before I knew it three hours had gone by. Going to allow for more time next time out.
