Leather sheath

Found this leather sheath on Burlington Island NJ walking through the woods hunting duck a few years back, I held onto it.

You guys think it was a kids toy or something better?












It has copper or brass tacks nailed to a piece of wood along its seam.

Possibly ? How long could leather last out in the elements? Even if it was dragged out of the ground by a groundhog! How long could it survive? Looks old to me but What would I have to do..... Carbon Date it?
