Lead "White Patina" Seal ?

I found this Monday after work hunting with bearbqd(Barry) at one of the field's I find alot of CW relic's and bullet's at.At first I thought it was piece of a bullet but noticed when I cleaned it up it has stamp's on both side's but has the same patina as you would find on CW lead. The one side has almost flower looking design while the other side has what I can only make out as an AKE and the a R or B as the last letter, not sure what might be in the front of these letter's.....If you know anything about "lead seal's",hopefully you can point me in the right direction to find out what it might have come from.Thank's for any info......just curious!!

Re: Lead "White Patina" Seal ?

They may well be off a bale of cotton but they were also used to seal railroad cars, or to measure the guage of wire. I have one with a date of 1852 on it and the name of the city. So it is perfectly likely you could dig one of these on a civil war site. I have. I like them, I have a display case with 12 or so in it.

i've found old lead seals. most unmarked. in my early years at a bakery i would go to the rail siding and inspect the rail cars full of flour. they were sealed like that. power meters too. probably lots of things. i read in w.e. treasures that soldiers would make stuff from musket balls too. and chew on them too. why? guess you have to get your lead poisoning some how.

Looks like a Bale seal.

Gypsy's right— of course!

It's a lead bale seal, probably 18th or early 19th century. Those dug in the U.S. typically were attached to bales of dry goods shipped here from the U.K. and other European nations.

Indeed, although I have a bag of them & none have faces, so a unusual find by UK standards.
