Also found on same former British island. This lead Whatzit is about the size of a half dollar and has parallel lines across it at two different angles. Near the top is what appears to be a shield shape bisected with a "+" into quarters. The back is flat. Never seen anything like it. Any ideas on this one? Thanks.

Hi, Is that a guess or have you found a similar one in England? What would it have been used for? The ones I've seen for scales have usually been chunkier. I know it's hard to discern in the photo, but this thing definitely has a pattern on the obverse that was not created by chance. Thanks for any input. Any idea on timeframe?

many lead weight have paterns on & many different thicknesses, they have been making them for hundreds of years in similar ways, so near impossible to date.

What were they used for? Can you post a pic of a similar item here? Thanks, Erik

Thanks for the link Crusader. After looking at the lead weights, it seems that my item more closely resembles an old "cloth seal." The dimensions are approx 40mm in diameter and 1mm+ in thickness. There's a very good chance that it's British in origin. The base metal in this case is definitely lead or a lead alloy. Regards, Erik
