I dug this lead weight up along the shore of Lake Erie. It was a few inches under rocks and shells, pretty close to the water. Based on its heavy weight yet relatively small size, I'm guessing it was used as a weight for a fishing net. The one side is flat and the other has a scalloped edge. There is a hole in the center with twine.

Can anyone verify my guess as to what it is and maybe help me determine how to place a rough age on something like this?

Thanks!

You might be able to get a close date by identifying the twine. If it is poly or nylon, it would be newer.

It looks like it could be a home-made anchor for a small boat, such as a canoe or pirogue.
Im pretty sure some of the earliest boat anchors were sometimes made out of large rocks with a hole drilled through the center.

likely a homemade decoy weight for geese due to size.
