I found this today detecting by an old farmhouse foundation. It is very heavy and soft ,I believe it is lead .Top is raised letters "ETAL Co" . Something metal company I guess. Bottom has a 4 stamped into it. All sides except the two marked surfaces seem to be broke .It is 1 3/8" thick, broke sides are about 3/4"

Does anyone have any ideas on what it is?

You could test it using the Mohs Hardness scale and streak. Use a piece of unglazed white porcelain or a streak plate. If it is lead it will leave a dark gray mark on the plate. If you scratch it with a pocket knife it should leave a silver metalic scratch. Lead has a hardness of 2.5

I am pretty sure it is lead and i have seen and have bar lead that is long thin bar marked lead 999 , this is more of a chunk of lead ,thick top to bottom , 1 3/8" thick and looks ripped or broken down sides. the raised letters on top look as though it would have been ***** metal Co , written in a circular pattern. The only other thing I could think of other than lead would be babbit And I think a steak test would show lead since babbit is 80% lead.

Hoyts Metal Co ? :icon_scratch:

My quick search has not shown up anything definitive, but there's some interesting discussion on this blog regarding Hoyts metal bars, so I thought I would throw it in the pool 8)

You may be on to something, trikiwi. Hoyt white metal for bearings is tin and lead. http://www.finishing.com/188/84.shtml

Just out of curiosity Im doing a search for the Hoyts Metal Co logo on lead but cant find it yet. I did however find the logo on a trap shoot target and the HOYT METAL CO. BLACKBIRD logo is circular. http://www.la84foundation.org/SportsLibrary/SportingLife/1905/VOL_45_NO_17/SL4517029.pdf

I have not seen a positive id, yet but thanks everyone for help looking. My guess is that the piece I have is a qaurter of the original cube if that is right it would mean it was approx. 1 3/8 on all sides but tapered slightly smaller towards the top, like a four sided flat top pyramid shape.

4-H staff, is that another find from kids at camp?
