Hi Everyone:

I found this lead toy in my daughter's attic while working on a heater duct. Her house was built in 1852. I have studied this under a magnifying glass and the best I can do is make a guess this is some kind of tank. There is a flat spot on the bottom which helps it to stand up without falling over. It's heavy so I'm guessing it's made of lead. Length is approximately 2 inches with a height of about 1/2 inch. I've put a ruler in with the pictures.

I've searched the internet and haven't found anything close.

Not a tank. Space ship?

1950's lead space ship toy:

This one is bigger than yours (5 x 2 inches) but you get the idea.

This one is closer to your size - Buck Rogers Tigership 2 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches:

It sure looks like a homemade two-dimensional lead toy. One that did not get enough lead poured into the mold, or was later shaved and filed down to look like a spaceship. It sure looks like the bottom half of toy WW1 era tanks that I have seen. Or, it could have been a bulldozer or other tracked vehicle. Just IMO. Very cool, Sub 8-)

Thanks for the responses. Subterranean may be correct as I found some pieces of lead with the toy which looks like a little may have been spilled at one time. The top is rounded a little which would be consistent with a lack of lead poured into the mold. You can see the parting lines at the bottom and on each side at the widest point. But nothing on the top.

I don't think it was a flying saucer or a spaceship.

We've had guesses here ranging from a bus to a train to a tank.

No gun or gun ports, probably not a tank. Futuristic looking, which everything forecast to be in the future in the '50's was all sleek as opposed to the vehicles of the 30's and 40's, while in real life a 1950's snow cat was all boxed in. My swag, a 1950's futuristic snow mobile, AKA Buck Rogers snow fleet on some strange frozen planet ???

I would say the mystery is solved. I compared my piece with the picture and it looks like I have a partial tank.

My question is..... apparently this particular toy could be made by someone who had the capability of melting lead. Does anyone know the time frame this would take place in??

Thanks again. I'll go ahead and mark this solved.

Great job of sleuthing!!

Just for poops and giggles, everyone should check out the post on the "Today's Finds," posted today by Viddy, titled, "Not another Chuckie." He found an intact, "semi-round" lead toy tank,...sweet! Same era, same design as the "half of one" found by daveo50! Sub
