For some reason, this just doesn't have that "seal" look to me. Is it lead?

Daryl
I thought the same thing Bio. I assumed it was because of the shape and size. :dontknow: I am not sure if its lead or not.

Find a spot that is screwed up anyway and try to scratch it with a needle. If it is soft and the scratch is shiny, it's most likely lead.

Did the test. Scratched it and it doesn't seem like lead. :dontknow:

Hey G, It looks like a lead bale seal used for 'cloth' with the weaver's initials as shown in the first pic: http://www.colchestertreasurehunting.co.uk/baleseals.htm

Another nice find! Breezie
That weaver seal looks different to me Breezie. I would love it if it was, but I am no longer sure if it is actually lead. :dontknow:
P.S I am heading to Colchester England to hunt with the guy who started that web site. :icon_thumleft:

Oh, cool G, you'll have a GREAT time. :icon_thumleft: Take the 'disk' with you and ask the authorities there. It looks like 2 disk melted together like bale seals look, but it may be an optical illusion from the pic. You're looking at it in person, can you see 2 edges? Is it heavy for its size? If it's not a bale seal, what are your other choices of having 2 disk molded together? :dontknow: Breezie

If you take it to Colchester, Chris will "bush it." I know this from personal experience. >:(

Daryl

Okay, Daryl, I'll bite. . .what does 'bush it' mean? ;D Breezie

You hand it to Chris and ask him what something is. If it's not a hammered silver coin or something like that, he says crap and throws it in the bushes by the side of the field. Good luck finding it. I lost a nice button that way last year. I quit asking in the field. :'(

ARE YOU SERIOUS????? You paid the guy many hundreds of pounds to hunt and he threw your find in the bush? Are you kidding me? I don't care if it was scarp lead if anyone tosses my find away they will be what's going into the bush!

Dang, sounds like you need to MD around the bush! He would probably throw out my entire collection since I don't have a single hammered silver coin. Mmm, doesn't sound like my cup of tea. Sorry 'bout your button. Breezie

Amen! I guess it's a good thing he doesn't come down South to MD; he would be wearing his metal detector after 'bushing' with some of these 'ole Bubbas.'
