Re: Lead seal? I'm not sure.

Possible railroad related? Find them out here near the train tracks.

Re: Lead seal? I'm not sure.

Lead seals are used on many things and can date to before the civil war. They were used to seal train cars amoung other things. Since yours has the 10 on it, I am guessing it came off a bale of wire to indicate the guage. I have a display case full of those and I enjoy adding to my collection. So if you don't want that one just send it along. :tongue3:

As above.

We would class it a Lead Sack/Bag Seal but used for many other reasons. As it has Co. I think it more likely Railway or electrical company related.

Thanks for the info. folks. I went back to that field today and found four more of them. They are soaking now. Not sure if they're the same as this one yet.

mmmmmmm........... steak

Anyways, I to thought this unusual for a lead item. I now never clean more than the lose dirt off lead items as water takes off the surface layer. Also dirt helps highlight the features.

Just trying to get some of the caked on dirt off of them IP. I ran them under the faucet and they're still a little dirty.

I'll keep this in mind in the future but I couldn't read them at all without soaking them a little. Thanks for the info. I'm a bit of a lead seal rookie I guess. :D I'll post pics of them in a minute.

Here's the four I found today. They all looked like the one on the bottom left before I tried to clean them up a little.

To be honest I can't really make out any of them. They just look like random letters to me. Any ideas on the other four?

Those are definite Bag seals. Probably had phosphates for the fields or seed for drilling.

Its more relavant for older oxidised pieces.

I agree with Cru on this subject. Have found thousands of lead bag seals and these look just like them!
