I was thinking the smae thing---But why would they put a seal on a bg of salt? ???

my research on lead shows they didnt know it was toxic untill round 1900 so that should help narrow it down on the date they stopped using them

Nice item. I'm not really sure as to what they are, but maybe they were used on old printing presses to print out their design to be used in advertising. Sorta like they used old printing blocks. Once they broke, they would throw them out. Just a guess.
