Not civil war stuff but from the same era but different country.
 

I found one of those lead seals. What is it? What does it come from? Looked like junk to me, but I kept it anyway as an interesting find. Mine really doesn't look like lead, more like iron. Some rust on it. But looks very much like the one pictured above.

Lead seals are certainly not junk! Your's sounds like a newer type seal which would have had an iron wire running through it to close an item. The older types were used to record makers, record taxation as well as to close a bale or satchel. My seal is not that old and only dates to the mid 1800's I do have an older seal from the early 1700s. They have been used for generations.
