Well, I'm not an expert either, but if it is a scroll an expert would carefully unroll it and see what it says.

It could be a piece of lead flashing for chimney work

Hmm, only problem with that is the size... and thickness for the size... as well as the tightness of the roll... Also after examination I THINK i see pale pale grey paint on the scroll on the inner most roll. Could be wrong, but that what i see

Its like diggin up a box with something in it and never opening it up. Open the roll of lead and you will see if it is a scroll or just rolled up lead. I have found lots of lead, folded, rolled, wadded and flat. Not out of the ordinary to be just a piece of lead.....but you got to unroll it......now.

Lead was used a lot in the colonies bullets repairs game pieces that's just a handy way to store it. I've found many just like it.

lead is pretty malleable and you would know right off the bat if it were gonna crack or break as you unroll it. As you unroll it and you see no writing, there will be nothing there to harm. If you do see something and it is unrolling nicely, then proceed. Chances are it is just rolled up lead. If it is a scroll as you think, then not unrolling it will still make it just a rolled up piece of lead because you really won't know whats in it. You can try using a hair dryer to warm it up for a smooth roll out.

Unrolled alot easier than i thought, but IF its a scroll, it wasnt meant to be opened often.

A friend of mine has a rolled up piece of lead that I just know was some sort of engraved CW ID tag with a hole through it at both ends, found at a campsite...but he wont unroll it or let me do it for him. That still bothers me, I wish he would just bite the bullet and unroll it. It may just be a homemade fishing weight, but unless he unrolls it I won't know.

I think it's a piece of lead flashing from a copper roof, the carpenter rolled it up and pitched it.
