I discovered this lead mask a couple of weeks ago while metal detecting in a school yard (school built around the 1950s). It was a couple of inches deep, near a child's swing. It measures about 1"x1.5" and weighs 65 grams (just over 2 ounces). It's quite heavy and I'm assuming it's lead. There's a small gouge on the reverse that shows the same metal inside. There are remains of a couple of brownish metal prongs sticking out of the top, presumably the remains of a ring where this might have hung from a necklace. The face is rather evil looking. The back is flat. I can't imagine that a child would wear lead but who knows. Does anyone know anything about this item?
The schoolyard was in Dawn Township, in Southwestern Ontario, near the old oil town of Petrolia.
