The mystery metal looks like copper to me. These things your posting Rean.c Some of them kind of remind me of items one would find on a rocky seacoast beach that have been washed and eroded by rocks and waves over a period of time?. Is this where you found this item?. Please tell more about the source and location of your 'what is it's'. Could be part of a lead cell battery to whats left of a hydrodynamic deep water lead trolling weight. :dontknow: Both would be items that lead and maybe other metals are used to make.

I'm sorry tamrock! ! But you are right about the location. It was along the coast line of Cape Breton Nova Scotia. Found a lot of half melted lead there. So I was thinking maybe a big boat fire of some sort?? And the lead appeared to be plastered onto something before it was melted

Wow! I looked up images of Cape Breton. What a beautiful place. My wife likes to visit the ocean ever two three years, but its always been places like Florida and California. I want to go up where your at and maybe go see L'Anse aux Meadows where the Vikings settled and other sites up there along the coast. So far I can't talk her in to going up that way. No telling what that thing is and I'm sure a fire would have made some kind of alteration if the two metals came in contact in a flame. It may just be your (what is it) will just go down like so many other items as a (what was it)???

Just curious, are you aware of the shipwreck history and sunken treasures associated with this area?

Are you sure it's lead and not zinc? Metal hulled boats would hang a zinc plate with a wire clamped to the hull or rigging while in port to prevent galvanic corrosion. Called a "fish".

Now you can even get them that look like fish.

It is a very beautiful place and would recommend coming down in autumn, it's really nice at that time of year.. Or in the summer that's a beautiful time as well. And I think you might be right about the two metal thing. Thank you for your thoughts :)

I am not aware of any treasure, but I think I'm the only one to stumble upon this wreck, I found a latch that seems to be for a old chest and this lock. The lock appears to be pretty old.

Haha thanks Charlie! The fish thing is cool and yes I'm 100% it's lead unless zinc scratched like lead and is the same weight?? Not familiar with that type of metal. Thanks for the info
