If Its harder than regular lead then its babbit.

Thanks for that info taz420. I'll have to do some sort of test to see if it is indeed babbitt. Maybe enlist a metallurgist or something.

If it's lead, a light tap with a hammer should result in mainly a dull sounding thud. Linotype or Babbit, IIRC, should have a bit more "ring" to it.
