Not sure if its lead or silver but probably is a button. I might try it in tin foil and baking soda just

for kicks.

Really? I'm kind of stunned..too bad the lesche chipped it. It's yet another one of my finds "on a trail in the woods with nothing else around"

You may not have chipped it, old pewter is fragile, just disturbing the dirt
it was in could break it. they can turn to dust in storage too.
Their crude design and odd shanks can be almost comical.
I don't think the style was made much after 1750...
The only buttons of earlier date in the new world are probably lead floral/geometrics.
Congrats on the oldie !!!

Ha, yeah, ('nothing else around'). See, I searched a hilly trail for about 1/4 mile and found maybe 11 cents and a lighter wheel (hate those things). I'm often conflicted about staying on the trail or just hittin the raw woods. I'm basically a highland coinshooter, but have had some relic successes lately.
Thanks for the pictures. It's definitely like some of those in that box. On the front of the button I think I can see a star, now that its dried out.
