I have found lead buttons at colonial sites in the past that were made from a mold, but I found this one today that's different. It's almost looks like a ball button, and it's solid lead. It reminds me of a squished .45 cal round ball with a shank on it. I can't imagine what it would have been used for because of the weight of it. I would appreciate any info you might have as to the use of it. The cent is for a size reference. Thanks for any input you might have.

Curtain weight comes to mind but I couldn't swear to it.

(Is your penny struck off center? It loses the rim at the top.)

It does look like pewter, but I didn't think pewter weighed that much. I can't imagine what these buttons would have been used for?

they were used for buttons....it really is that simple....it is important to adopt the view of "then"then is not now and sometimes it is what it is.you have a cool pewter button say I.it is what it is...you would never be able to tell the differance in weight between pewter and lead unless you did that 40 hrs a week.and even then you would be wrong often.

I am no expert...but I have researched these many times for my fellow members.I stand by what I see.A very cool pewter button...19th century.I hope someone teaches me something here.

all good.
cheers
