Lead Ball... Canister Shot?

Got this out of a field next to a one room school house this afternoon. Good size to it, almost one inch. Any ideas?

I was told by another member that when lead turns to be over 100 yrs old that it turns white? This must be old huh?

I would guess canister shot, but the canister shot I have seen has been made of iron, not lead.
