I dug this lead angel the other day from the side yard of an old house. She/he is 3 inches long and pretty hefty. What puzzles me is the "tail-like" thing running from under the violin to between the legs :icon_scratch: Part of a leg and the feet are missing. Any ideas what this would be from or attached to?

Its a garden cherub. The tail is a strip of cloth to cover his/her private parts.

Thrilla, Your Victorian cast angel is quite unusual because most cast pieces from that era were either brass or bronze, and were found on everything imaginable from clocks to door knockers. They were also cast in silver for smaller pieces like vanity mirrors and the likes. I'm thinking since yours is in lead, it may have been decoration for a cemetery marker or cemetery related piece. DCMatt is correct; it is a decorative piece, and yes, the ribbon(s) generally flowed to cover the private parts.
Super neat find :) Breezie

Thanks Breezie. It IS heavy so I am assuming it is lead but could be pewter I suppose. It was found in a yard of an old dowtown house (no cemeteries nearby) but I was trying to imagine why a decorative piece would be made out of lead.
