Over the River and thru the Woods...
Detector(s) used
Team Tesoro
I figured I'd save this one for last. I have been twisting my brain trying to figure out what this piece is. Dug this about thirty feet from the river's edge (again, from the old town site - just a bit further down river). I still do not have an electrolysis system set up yet (working on it), but I have cleaned this piece quite a bit since recovery. Where the hole is was packed solid with rock-hard clay - I gently used a small nail (who says square nails are junk ) to clean out as much as I could without damaging the piece. I then scrubbed the heck out of it to get most of the large "chunky" bits of corrosion off. At first glance, one would think it to be a small hammer or pick of some kind, but it is not. The hole is not in the right place for it to be one of those choices. Almost looks to be a lever of some sort, but for what?! Both sides are fairly well proportionate to each other although it does look hand forged (hammered?). The last photo shows a close-up of the one end that seems like it was chipped at some point. You can also see a little bit of the metal itself through the little bit of crust that still remains. I'd love to get a positive i.d. on this piece. Any help would be fantastic. Thanks again... 8)

Ok when I said eye strap, its more like a "chock". Chock's normally are open ended. But I KNOW I've seen em closed with an eyelet type like you have made of iron.
Most eye straps are brass or stainless steel now ( nice and shiney). But I still believe its something to hold the boat to a mooring.
Here are some newer "chocks" but they are not exactly what I nor you would imagine

Does this piece look like it's been broken on each end? ( screwed down to something at one time?).
Just guessing on this end.. but usually I don't get that strong of a feeling on something and it's proximity to the water.

No broken ends on this piece. On on end it looks as if it were chipped at some point in time. Definitely no place to be screwed down. :icon_scratch:

Think it's off a mule/horse harness chain or trace chain that piece went thru a ring on the harness and the other end of the chain hooked to the single tree

Have you ever seen one with a closed-eye? Would this have taken a heavy load bearing? Sorry for the questions but the eye itself seems rather small. It would have had to be connected by a snap hook but a small one. I'm going to continue to try and chip some more off to see if the hole is bigger than it looks.
