LC, KG, Relics & Mystery Items

Weather man was predicting a major winter storm (which fortunately did not happen), so hit sites near home this weekend.

Louis (MetalHeadz) invited me to one of the local sites he has pounded. Decided to hunt near the foundation with the “sifting” program on the Nox and pulled some relics including some buttons, RR tag and pin.

I think this is Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railroad.

Another RR related item with the Pennsylvania Railroad button and I think the gold pin with the eagle is a Boy Scout item.
And a few other relics including the neck of a blob top bottle, first I have seen.

Then made it out to my local park’s old home sites I have pounded, but it was pretty cold so did not want to go far.

Targets were really sparse, but decided to hit an old farm access road near one of the old 1800’s dots in the park. Got a great tone finally, 29-30 repeatable, tight and small.

Then 10’ away another 27-28 perfect signal.

1848 Large Cent and KG, first coppers of the year.

Here are the mystery items all from sites early 1800’s to mid 1900’s.

And for the spoon fans out there, it was a double spooner.

Oh, and one very unexpected surprise. I was painting the kitchen this weekend and when I pulled out the fridge there was all kinds of random bits of trash and dust bunnies and this random treasure.

Good luck out there!

An excellent day regardless of the weather. My ground was frozen before the big chill hit!

That Railroad Luggage? Tag must be super collectible!

The tag is awesome. Can you elaborate on the "sifting" program for the Nox?

Thx! “Sifting” with the Nox was explained by vferrari on the Nox forum. Basically it is a strategy I use for very old sites that have bad concentrations of iron, around old cellar holes. Field2, Horseshoe on, Mid recovery and Sensitivity turned all the way down to 15. Swinging very slow short 12” swings, allowing the Nox’s speed and target separation to focus on a much smaller area. The tag was easily 8” down in among nails and still gave a nice high repeatable tone.

I knew you'd find some relics at the Davis site. Unfortunately the site was recently half bulldozed so it cut back the potential. Congrats on your first large coppers of the year. I want to go out today but I might just wait until the weekend.

Very nice finds! That tag is really nice. Congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Congrats on the tag and the coppers. I can't believe you went out yesterday.
The round piece with the square hole is a drawer pull escutcheon.

Glad you were able to get out! :hello2:

Thx again for the invite! No silvers left there, but definitely relics under the layer of trash and iron. Those beer can tops sound sweeeeeet!

Thx for the ID on the escutcheon Steve. This relic and the 2 coppers were found at the site of our first hunt together. That dot is still producing oldies believe it or not. Never hunted out I guess. The KG is probably same time period as the half Reales and shoe buckle frame fragments I found there.

Here is one I found with the whole drawer pull assembly. My escutcheon is oval in this case, but I have found a number of round ones like yours.

Nice finds. That U.S. Large Cent has some good detail on it still. Congrats!

Thx! Most of the coppers around here are pretty beat. I’ve found 6 LC’s and 6 KG’s over the last 3 years. I’m always surprised when a KG pops out. Would have thought there would be more LC’s than KG’s in W PA.

Now that is a top shelf hunt. I love the railroad items and that PRR button is really cool. Must be thawing out a bit back your way. Congrats.

And you would be right to think that. Here are some numbers from a slightly larger sample size for those keeping score at home:
Since 2011 when I started keeping annual coin totals, I have dug 42 identifiable US Large Cents and 21 identifiable King Georges. This is not counting 5 state coppers and 34 unidentifiable large coppers dug during this period.

Nice finds! That largie is a beauty. Congrats.
