I found this button hunting an old school here in Oklahoma. The front says "LAWRENCE INDIAN SCHOOL" and the back says "SCOVILL MFG. CO WATERBURY." I believe it refers to the old Lawrence, KS. indian school which was later renamed the Haskell Institute in 1890. It was a government funded school which could account for the U.S. letters in the center of the front. Any more information on the button would be appreciated along with possible values. I've exhausted my normal avenues of finding information. Thanks!

From the best I can tell, the Lawrence Indian School was originally founded in 1884. As you mention, it's name was change to Haskell Institute in 1890. Here are some snippets of information I compiled for you.

That is a very neat old button, and I would bet it is quite rare! Nice Find!

This old button is probably as relatively rare in Oklahoma as some of the early finds we see back on the east coast. I would love to have one like it in my collection. And welcome to the forum. Stick around and enjoy . Monty

I was born and raised in Lawrence, Kansas. I believe Haskell University was named after John Gideon Haskell, a noted architect of the 1800's. He designed the Douglas County courthouse and many other buildings of the era.

You found this in Oklahoma? Since the Haskell school was in Kansas, maybe a student attended Haskell and the old school where you found this button? This is a stretch, but I knew I had heard of Haskell school in conjunction with the little town I live in. Here is a link to the Hominy Indians pro-football team. It mentions being able to recruit very good players from Haskell school. That is a really neat find, I would be thrilled.

That would be very interesting to know. It's contrary to all that I have read, snippets of which I posted earlier, so now I wonder what the real story behind it is.

Guess it's research time.

Thanks for posting another possibility!

However, I could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure most of the Indian schools were somewhat loosely linked by the BIA and common interests. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have athletic contests, etc between the different Indian schools. It is quite possible that students visited each other every now and then. The button could have been placed in this manner. Monty

No, I really have no idea. You probably should post it in the button section as we have several experts there. Monty
