Recently went to a late 1700's house which I came to find also has a one room school house on the property and was also a union camp for a couple of years. Found a near perfect 1853 (with arrows around date variety) half dime. Can still read Liberty as clear as day and the coin is simply beautiful. Also found an old padlock with the words 'patent and VR with the royal crown on the key cover. still have to clean it up.
Where can I find some good antique padlock info?
Will post pics when I get a chance.

Re: late 1700s home

Hey Jeric, sounds like a couple of great finds. I will be waiting to see the pictures.
Can't help you on the old padlock, but you can bet that there will be two or three folks
on this net that can. GREAT HUNT.....and wishes for another just like it!!!

Re: late 1700s home

Your lock dates between 1837 and 1901. The "VR" stands for "Victoria Regina" (Queen Victoria) of Britain.

Great find on the half dime. Got a photo?

Sounds like a great spot !

Following a quick search, I would grid the property, so nothing was missed.

Then, search again, maybe after 6 months when the moisture content of the soil has changed.
Never know, it could make a difference !

Good luck

Re: late 1700s home

have to be honest, we were so excited to have such an historic property and figured out right away that it had never been hunted before that we were everywhere on the property. Did not do any grids or anything really. So, next time back, we will be more patient. Also, the house has a dirt basement and they've invited us in to see what we can find there.
Hopefully, the next time we go, it will have rained and the soil won't be so darn hard. it was like concrete in some spots!!

Nice find's Jeric.....Hope you stumble on to some Camp find's real soon  Best of luck at this site!!

Re: late 1700s home

I hope so too. They were on the property for a few years, there's got to be something there. Most of my finds were pretty deep, say 6 to 8 inches. I wonder if there's been a layer of topsoil put on the property sometime over the years.

That's a nice halfdime man.

They are hard coins to come by.
