Last Trip to one of my Indian War Sites for this Year

I knew we had a cold front coming so the wife and I packed the camper and went out for a few days to enjoy the fall foliage and cooler weather. Of course I managed to work in some detecting time, also. Here's the board with the keepers. I also have a bucket with horseshoes, mule shoes and ox shoes along with a few other large iron pieces. My favorite find was the saber hanger from a saber belt. First one I've found and I've wanted one for awhile. There's a big variety of lead bullets, but the casings I found were .56-50, .50-70 and .44 Henry. That shiny rectangular piece with the design work has me stumped. The long thin piece of brass below it is part of it, also. The buttons were mainly general service, but there's one Infantry coat button and a Calvary and General's Staff cuff button. It snowed last night so it was time to come home and start researching for next year.

That's a heck of a haul. That site must still have a lot of keepers in the ground. A couple of those bullets look like Richmond Labs Sharps, but that defies all logic on that site

Thanks! I'll get a picture shortly and post it. It's pretty thin so it's basically a reverse of the front side except not shiny. I think the front side might've been plated, but it appears the primary metal is brass.

I'm not a great guy on bullets, Steve, but these IW sites continue to confuse me. There's such a large variety of bullets...not so much by caliber, but by manufacturer. Thanks for looking!

I couldn't tell from the first image if the rectangular part was intended to slide up and down the shaft, but I see from your new image it is clamped to the shaft and the "legs" bent over on the backside.

It's definitely an odd piece. I have no idea what it would've been used for.

The bend on the end of the shaft looks intentional. I'm wondering if it might have been used as a sliding damper of some sort to control air flow.

Someone with more knowledge than me would have to say! Ha. Probably about 25% of the things I find at these sites I don't know what they are. I have a ton of books from the Indian War period and I do try to identify things, but some of it really exceeds my abilities.

I,m a bullet guy so I really do like those bullets.they sure did use some big old hunks of lead back then,I,d hate to get hit by one of those!! Nice bunch of finds for sure.

I like them, also Crash, it's just hard to identify them....such a large variety especially of the .58 and .45/.44 cals. I wish there was a good reference book on Indian War cartridges/bullets like some of the many available covering the CW. Maybe there is, but I've not run across one that shows detailed information on the variety of bullets. I know some of these I'm finding were also used during the CW, but some of the later ones in metallic cartridges weren't. This site was active from 1865-1870.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I'll keep going back as long as I'm able and as long as the land owner allows. I always show the finds and let them pick through and take what they want. They usually don't take much though.
