This was our last day on the last ploughed field in our area. So spent 7 crazy digging hours (14 man hours) & got 64 buttons, a new record this year. Thats 152 buttons in 3 days.

Some new types of military badges
New types of button (1 I need an ID on in the whatzit section)
Broken Hammered
Silver fob watch back dated 1884 (Birmingham)
Nice early Medieval dog swivel with zoomorphic decor
A massive musket ball :icon_scratch:
5 Scrappies
2x 17th century tokens

We have only covered 1/2 of the field, so one day we will finish the other 1/2.

Crusader, that is a bunch of buttons & such. Nice hunting. With all that i would think you would have dug some coins.

This field was one of a few owned by a farmer who burnt many uniforms from WWI. Most stuff we find is 1890s-1920s. One shoulder badge we found today was made no later than 1914.

Look in the whatzit & see what you think about the button.

A toy but a toy for the toy soldiers :D

Musket balls varied much in size as you know, very small (pellets I guess) to quite large. But your large lead ball
is a small cannon ball, at least that is my opinion. Some cannon were quite small, hand cannons.

Here is a photo of a lead (along with iron) cannonball, the following text belongs to the photo...

Lead and iron cannon balls from Dún an Óir.
Dún an Óir at Smerwick on the Dingle peninsula was the scene of one of the most tragic events of the Desmond rebellion.
In 1580 six hundred Spanish and Italian troops were sent to aid the Earl of Desmond. They garrisoned Dún an Óir, a
coastal fort, where they were bombarded by crown forces. Having been surrounded, they had no choice but to surrender,
after which they were brutally massacred. These are some of the cannon balls that were used in that conflict.
