Well the last hunt of 2011 was less than spectacular, but I did have a few good relic finds, including plenty of flat buttons, a few Zuoave buttons, a large bent dandy button and the shield. The tombac at the top left read as and iron target, which is why I accept way into the ferrous range.

I am curious about the shield, as I dug another one like it a few years back. This one had at least one hook, so it was obviously attached to something. Any ideas?

Happy New Year everyone!

That "shield" piece is a tippet or finial to a leather strap, like a reins.

Nice outing my friend and nice strap end as Steve pointed out :icon_thumleft:

See my reply #12 on this post, which has a historical photo of one in use:

Best Wishes,

Buckles

I believe these were used on all kinds of leather straps. I find them mainly on late 18th early 19th century sites. I have seen one in use on a long leather strap.

Neil, nice haul on the buttons. This weekend is gonna be decent so far, maybe one more outing? :icon_thumright:
