Last night's jewelry jar, and a question about a set of earrings.

Payed 32 dollars for this jar...positive ID on a 925 marking so I bought it since the last one worked out well. Not as good as the previous but I got 4 silver bracelets, and one earing not on scale since there is stones on it.




So not as good as the last jar but I managed to get this set of earings marked 750 which tested positive for 18k....i just can't get a accurate weight because of the black stones or whatever they are. They weigh 13.07 grams as is so idk...im guessing at least 2 grams 18k.

MY QUESTION: In high grade jewelry marked 18k would junk glass or plastic be used as a stone? Anyone have any input?

I would think not so much. Maybe crystals but not plastic or paste in my opinion.

Test the stone by tapping it on your tooth. You can tell plastic or crystal/glass right away.

If you have not done it before practice with something yiu know is plastic and glass So you can learn the difference.

I'd venture to say that the stone is black onyx and the earrings were made in Italy, as that looks like a post 1968 Italian makers mark.

Shine a light into them then look at them with a loop magnifier to see any inclusions and color dark blue/black or opaque. in your picture I see a hint of dark blue but could be mistaken by your lighting. Dark blue could be saphires.

When I cleaned it with a cloth to look at it under a loupe shining a light to it it sorta looks like it has this white hue to it...i can't get a good pic. I'll keep trying.

Ok, did that...definitely not blue and they aren't perfectly round...but they do have this whitish glint to them....sorta like the light is not reflected but also reflected at the same time if that makes sense...

Could still be onyx. Is the stone magnetic? Other common black stones used in jewelry include melanite, black tourmaline, black spinel, black star diopsides, jet, hematite and obsidian. A few of these are magnetic. I'd like to see a better photo of the marks myself. Use a magnifying glass in front of your camera if you don't have a good macro setting.

I think there's definitely more gold weight than stone weight there, unless those stones are a polished hematite. Just guessing as I don't the size of the stones, but if they're like Onyx I would wager they wouldn't be anymore than 5 grams together?

I agree, didn't even register (the 2 grams) until I reread the thread. Even if hematite I would think at least 6-7 grams of gold. The stones really aren't that big in comparison to the rest of the earring. The back is also covered, even if the pieces themselves are hollow. I just want a better shot of the marks myself.

You are all awesome and such a great help...very enthusiastic bunch of people. They are not magnetic...I tried the best I could with my loupe for the makers mark. I also drew a basic example of what it shows. Also put it next to a 1966 quarter I dug today. They ARE hollow....which made me think a few grams compared to the 14k hollow heart pendant from my prior post that weighed in at about 1.5 grams.
