Was up in the 40's on Sat in northern NJ and I was able to get out for 2 hours between Xmas preparations at home. Headed to a local 1800's farmouse that I've hunted before.

First target sounded like a shallow zinc cent and I was a bit surprised that the ground was frozen as I dug. First couple inches like concrete! I was pleasantly surprised by my first small, fully intact, and nicely ornate buckle. No markings other than the small "o" where the tongue rests.

About 5 minute later, I got a pulltab signal and then dug this second fully intact tiny buckle that appears to be even older!

On the back it is inscribed "PAT APP'D FOR" - any info on this one, age, type, etc?

Finally, as dusk was setting in I dug this colorful pin, obviously from the first half of the 20th century:

On the back it is inscribed "JC POLLACK CO"and "CHICAGO". All in all not a bad, short, 2 hour hunt which may be my last of the year as it promises to be a cold week.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Very Nice Buckles and they both still have their tangs. Congrats. :icon_thumleft:

Gorgeous buckles there Erik! :notworthy:
Would love to know how old they both are. :icon_scratch:
Great looking shield pin too, great colors! :o

See I told you I've never found one intact - thought they were called tounges....thanks for the reply and proper nomenclature with "tang!" :D Two of them for me, five minutes apart was rare!

Best, Erik

Thanks Antiquarian! Yes, I hope someone on the What Is It? forum can help me date them. I think the smaller one is older and I'm curious as to what such a small buckle might have been used for. This site holds a lot of history, but a lot of iron too, plus two demoed houses so parts are a bit rough going, but always some interesting there. Thanks again for your reply!

Thanks for your replies and kind words!

Dean, Tomm, and Ticm,

Thanks for your compliments! I was just happy I didn't get skunked on my last trip out. :D Getting mighty cold in NJ as we speak. :'(

For you guys in NJ, please drop me a PM if you'd like to get together for a hunt sometime as I usually hunt solo. I'm in northern NJ.

Thanks again guys!

Best, Erik

some cool buckles! never seen anything like those :icon_scratch: hope somebody can give you a date range on those lookers

Thanks HMN! If you've never seen anything like those then they must be pretty unusual with all the great relics you find. I'll put them on the What Is It? forum to see if anyone can provide any info.

Best, Erik
