Nice finds congrats, those coins look nice

I think i missed out on a decent find...just checking this metal scrap and it's finely engraved...the plow took away any hope of a positive ID.

Diameter is about 29mm...

You can measure the diameter and find the gauge here:
4 gauge 4" (100mm)
8 gauge 3¼" (83mm)
10 gauge 2⅝", 10 bore 2⅞", 10 bore 3½" (89mm)
12 gauge 2" (18.5 x 51mm), 12 bore 2½" (18.5 x 63mm), 12 bore 2¾" (18.5 x 70mm), 12 bore 3" (18.5 x 76mm), 12 bore 3½" (18.5 x 89mm)

My guess is that you're holding an 8 gauge shell. Easy enough to measure though. If it's an 8-gauge, it's an OLD shell. I think they were banned in some states sometime before 1920... I'd do the research, but I'm just not that interested. LOL

My grandfather used to talk about goose hunting with one. Apparently, they had quite the reach. :)

Skippy

I have fired a 10G. but honestly never knew that anything larger existed. Slow day when you don't learn something.
Very high grade indeed on the provincial copper.
I got to get off this frozen mountain,

Nice. Love the New Brunswick penny.

I think you have a 4 gauge Romeo. Rare caliber and most guns were made out of the country. Do some more checking on it, that's a real neat find. Any headstamp markings at all?

Thanks...still researching. The info I found on Wikipedia indicates that it is actually a 3 gauge...big f'ing gun I bet! Nothing stamped unfortunately...

Was 29mm measured at the necked down part of the casing or at its widest point on the rim? They give bore sizes to figure out the gauge so you need to measure the smaller size of the casing.

Here's some shells

Ahhh...I was measuring the widest part. You are correct...it measures out to be a 4 gauge.

Believe that's what they used to use for elephant hunting. You didn't put that one against the shoulder lol. It went against a tree. Nice looking coins buddy. Too bad about the broken piece

Thanks...left wondering what it could have been...maybe i'll find more.

I thought this was neat as well...200+ year old thread.

Crotal?
Maybe
I love your coins and that hatchet is cool, Mon I found a new site that must have thousands of those 50 caliber casings on it.
