ive only been looking for coins for about the last 3 weeks. it all started when i was watching the show 'storage wars' and they found some silver quarters, i thought that was interesting. my girlfriend has a huge jug of change she has accumulated over the last 4 years from waitressing, i figured that would be the place to start looking.
i started by sorting out all the quarters by hand. word to the wise; use lots of lysol and maybe even gloves when going through this much change, there have been many fingers on these coins, im guessing alot of people 'from all walks of life'
didnt find a single silver quarter. there were also about a 8 half dollars, none silver. fail.
i found alot of bicentennial coinage, unfortunately made in 1976 and not in 1776. not worth more than face value, but i set aside a quarter and a half dollar just for fun.
i did find a fair amount of Susan B Anthony dollars (11 of them) probably given to my gf thinking they were quarters. i know they too are not worth more than face value, but i set aside a 1979, 1980, and 1999. maybe i can find a 1981 somewhere to complete the set. i know if i got rid of them id probably come accross an '81 next week and facepalm myself so hard id have to go to the hospital. not in perfect condition, but fun nonetheless.
so after i pretty much got skunked after going through over $1,000 in change i read up a little more and found out some dimes were silver as well (like i said, only been into coins for about 3 weeks) so i dumped it all out, again, sorted them all by hand, again, and VOILA! 1963. sorry for the crappy picture, aparently the macro on my camera isnt the greatest. a tripod would probably do wonders. this was the only silver coin in the whole jug.
at this point, i had almost been fully enthralled into finding silver coins, i decided to go get a few rolls of half dollars. first 3 banks i went to had no half dollars. so i decided to head to the biggest bank in town. armed with a $50 bill i picked up 5 rolls of halves. ..low and behold..
wahoo! next day, go dump $49.50 worth of halves at my local credit union and go back to the big bank with $100. after i get my 10 rolls i ask the teller how many rolls she had left in the back room, she said 12 more rolls and i figured i would be good to go for more next week after i get through these.
skunked. 9 of the 10 rolls were marked with permanent marker, "EV" in big black letters. fail.
the next week, dump $100 in halves at a different bank (we have probably 15 banks or credit unions in a town of around 12,000 people, i have lots of options) and head to the big bank to clean out whatever rolls of halves they have left. turns out i may have some competition, or they are already getting sick of me, as she only comes back with 3 rolls, after last week when she said they had 12. oh well, take what you can get i guess. of the 3 rolls i pull out two from '69. not too shabby, ill take it.
at this point, im itching for more. i go back to the big jug. again. pull out all pre-82 pennies that are 95% copper. just for fun.
in doing so; 17 wheaties.
1939
1940
1944 x 3
1945
1951
1952
1953
1956 x 3
1957 x 3
1958 x 2
and just over 900 pre-82 pennies. i put the majority into one bag with a total face value of $9.00 which is around 6 lbs. the rest went into a smaller bag to keep adding to until i get a nice round number and seal it off and put it on the shelf.
so After going through that huge jug of change. three times. BY HAND. i went out and bought a cheap change sorter and scale from walmart. probably something i shouldve done beforehand. oh well. i love my canvas bag. my equipment;
so all in all not a bad last 3 weeks for just getting into the hobby, not a HUGE haul, but a good start id say. right now im putting a freeze on most of my extra cash because im currently in the process of buying an investment property, but when my tax return gets here i plan on ordering a box of halves and a box of dimes to go through to keep myself occupied. my girlfriend has put her jug of change on lockdown so i dont dump it out again. although she does let me go through what she brings home before she puts it in the jug. fair enough.
in the meantime i have switched from making 99% of my day to day purchases with a check card, to taking out cash and using that to buy groceries, gas, booze, etc. easy way to filter out a little bit of the change flowing through this town.
thanks for looking!!!
