Got out for a couple more hunts that will most likely be my last 2 hunts of the year. Hit a field last week that was producing a few buttons and other early 1800s relics. Definitely going to hunt this field again next year because my buddy Tony and I haven't nearly covered it well enough yet. Yesterday we hunted another field that has produced early 1800s finds in the past but has not been plowed since I first hunted it 7 years ago. It was plowed this year and had corn in it so we decided to give it a try. Here's a few pictures of the total finds for the 2 days of hunting followed by a couple closer pics of some of the finds.

Thought the piece in the last 2 pictures was a holed large copper but when I turned it over I realized it wasn't. Anyone know what this is?

Found a cool pendant in the first field we hunted. What seems odd to me was that when I cleaned it off you can see that the orientation of the clasp makes the horseshoe design hang upside down when it is worn. I thought horseshoes were supposed to be facing up for good luck.

Found a piece of a buckle that looks very similar to one I found a few weeks back.

Here's the piece I found a few weeks back.

The last thing I dug was a silver dime from the second field we hunted. I thought it would be a seated or even maybe a capped due to the age of the relics coming up but it was obviously a more recent farmer drop because it was a 1941 Merc.

Thanks for looking and best of luck to everyone next year.

Lots of targets there.
Those buckle frags would have been a sweet find if still intact.

Yep the season is winding fast now, I see a couple have already made a year end post. Don't know why I'm holding out myself, only had one hunt in the last 25 or so days.

You found some really nice pieces in the fields. I wish there was some history in the farm fields down here.

About the pendant, I'm thinking it's so the good luck can spill over the person wearing it.

The horseshoe is considered very lucky and used to be hung in many homes to protect and attract good fortune for the family residing inside. As with many superstitions, there are contradictions to be found with the beliefs associated with the horseshoe. For instance, many believe that to hang it with the ends pointing upwards is good luck as it acts as a storage container of sorts for any good luck that happens to be floating by, whereas to hang it with the ends pointing down, is bad luck as all the good luck will fall out. Others believe that no matter which way you hang the horseshoe, good luck will come. According to this superstition, the ends-pointing-down display simply means that the good luck is able to flow out and surround the home. If the horseshoe is hung over a doorway, ends up will catch good luck and ends down will let the good luck spill over the door and stop evil from entering. Perhaps a combination of the two was used so that after a few days, when the horseshoe was filled with good luck, it would then need to be emptied so that residents could benefit from that luck and the process would be repeated until the end of time.

Now that's a big group of finds. Lots of variety and nice examples of everything. Good way to close the year out if it really is the end there.
