Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving.

Went out on Friday to a new hole that I found that was not on the 1867 maps. You might remember my thread about stonewalls & old roads.

Friday only had about 2hrs to hunt & the 1st target was this Double Gilt button. After that nothing else poped up.

Met up with a buddy of mine today & man was it colder than Friday, but thats ok as we were dressed for it.

Pulled 3 more buttons & the oval disc thingy with the 2 holes in it. That was it after pounding the site pretty good. Must be some coins there....Will have to hit it up again after a good soaking rain.

After that Frank took me to a spot he calls O'le Reliable. Pulled out this thin colonial button with a star pattern as well as this oval thingy with the black leather still in it. Other than that not much else came out for me except a pocket memorial spill....:BangHead: :laughing7:

Great job, awesome finds!

I like the star "button"!I can't see where the shank was attached.Cool oval leather thingy.I think that other piece of leather went behind it.

Thanks Guys!

Nice finds! Where you find that kind of stuff, the coppers and Spanish silvers aren't far behind,

The oval thing with two holes was mated to a decorative bracket. What purpose they served has spawned much speculation, but nobody has yet found an example in the context of it's use. So many of these oval and brackets are found on late colonial and early 19th century sites that it is amazing that they are still a mystery..... Here are a couple pictures showing what I mean. The first picture are two ovals and two brackets of mine that were not found mated together, but matched just to demonstrate. The following pictures are of a non-oval varient found in South Carolina with the bracket attached when dug.

Forgive me if you have heard this before :)

Gotta love those flat and colonial buttons for making even a coinless hunt worth while. Great finds!

Congrats on all the finds. There is nothing worse then digging modern coins at an old site!

Thank You very much! Never heard or saw this before so now I'm a bit more educated!

The more I think of it, perhaps this black leather item was a piece of mourning jewelery.

Actually, no... but I'd like to... post a link?
