Yesterday got out for a 4 hour dehydrating, tick infested hunt at a place I've hit a lot. Tried a new area farther out and found a 1918 wheat, a 1939 Wheat, a really ornate beret that might be silver, don't know, a really toasted bad 1902 V nickel (my 5th) and a decent Buffalo 1916 (my 10th for the year).

Today tried a place new to me nearer to where I live. Only had 90 minutes. First 30 minutes found 2 V's on opposite sides of a hill. 1909 (which is by far the best condition V I've dug, at least from a metal stand point) and a 1906 V. I am up to 7 V nickels this year! Today's nickels only needed water and a little soap. Leaving them as is. Began my Nickels from yesterday in Sauce, but stopped while I was ahead.

Any opinions on whether this is silver? It came from an area with a lot of oldies (near 1918 Wheat and 1902 V). It sure is intricate:

It looks like it's silver to me. You sure do find a lot of nickels, You The Nickel King :icon_king:

Jon, you are KILLING those early nickels  . . . and the silver's along for the ride as well!

That jewelry piece does have a silver look to it. . . it's still shiny so it must be silver :)

I would definately say silver.

As everyone has said before...MAN your Killing those nickels. One of those is going to be a nice gold ring I bet.

I've found a lot of old broochs/hairpins Jon and your's looks fantastic by most comparisons. If it wasn't silver, it seems there would be rot in the much of it by now. I'm voting yes, silver.

And hey. leave some of those nickels for me next hunt!

Not sure how you find all those nickels. Whenever I go for something in the 14 range it's usually foil! Love to hear your secret on how you get all of them! I think I have only found 4 nickels in 2 years!!!

Great finds

Well, what you don't see is all the beaver tails, shotgun casings, bullets, ball point pens, and the like that I do dig. Actually most the time I dig those, I am pretty sure they aren't nickels due to how they sound, but I dig anyway just in case. Usually, I am 90% correct when I think it is going to be a nickel, but there are a few surprise junk pieces. I have been running my etrac with a simple smart find screen which screens out anything below CO 10 and anything below FE 27, so pretty wide open. A lot of my nickels come in anywhere between 11-11 and 15-15, usually the good targets have been giving pretty consistent sound and signature. Beaver tails usually sound too loud for a given depth, but I still usually dig em anyway. I am afraid some of the "coin programs" without looking to closely at them, may miss the nickels that register too low, say 11-11, or too high 15-15. I think I've only dug 1 nickel that had a CO of 16, I don't dig above co 16 unless it sounds really, really good.

On my DFX, the nickels seem to fluctuate on #'s and tone ID, more than any other coin. Probably why I dig so few.

Great looking V's

CONGRATS ON THE NICKELS!
