I haven't been able to get my detector out all weekend until today. I went to my mom's house to drop off a couple of books and to see if she needed anything. Well while we were visiting I decided that I would get my detector out of the truck and walk down by the old barn as I had never done any detecting there before. It was late and I just could not resist doing a little detecting this weekend even if there were only about 15 min. of daylight left. So off to the barn I go expecting to find a couple pieces of old junk like nails, tabs, or scrap iron. I started swinging my detector and it starts beeping like it located a penny. So ok I dig and find a piece of copper wire. Ok, kind of what I expected. I walk around to the back of the barn and start sweeping again this time the detector beeps sometimes like it found a penny and sometimes like it is just a piece of junk. So ok I dig again and find the front part of an old soldering iron like you would heat up in a fire or forge. I walk around to the side of the barn and look at the sky. Rain is coming in and it is getting dark. I lower my detector coil and reach for the shut off and all of a sudden it beeps like it found a quarter. I have never found and old quarter so I am going to dig even if it is almost dark. So I start digging and at about 3 or 4 inches out pops an oval shape. I pick it up and brush away some mud, its shiny, so I stick it in my pocket and take it to the house. I put my detector in the truck and go inside and walk over to the kitchen sink. I take the oval shape out of my pocket and start to wash away the mud then I see that it is some sort of religious medal. I get all the mud off and discover a Catholic Miraculous Medal. I found one earlier in the week and it was very thin like a tab and I thought it was a tab at first but this one is thick and very nice detail. I turn it over and it has some words on it close to the bottom that I can't read so I get out a magnifying glass and see that it says sterling. So it may not have been a silver quarter but it was still silver. Here are the pictures.

Awesome find, hopefully it really is that old....does the site have a history back to the mid 1800's? Of course it could have been lost later. Sometimes when I get home from work in the evening I'll take my detector out, even if it is for just 15 or 20 min....haven't found anything near that good though in that time frame but it still just feels good to get out....even if just for a few min, it is very calming and relaxing for me. Again, congrats...

I have been told that the date on the medal is not the date of the medal but a date of some religious significance.

Nice, I have one just like it. Some times the last few minutes are the best minutes.

BP, this is a Catholic medal, recent make. My Native American VERY Catholic mother-in-law leaves them all over our house and even buried in the back yard (hers are in French). They're a kind of a blessing thing. I've found 2 of them in the back yard in the last few weeks and we find them stashed away in drawers, cabinets, etc all over the house after they visit. :)

That barn sounds like it may rate another visit or 3, especially with a small coil.

HH, ya'll!

Wow! That's a great find BP! I know you will want to revisit that spot!

Congrats!!

Very nice looking piece, WTG!!!
I have yet to find any of those types charms yet, but when, or if, I do, I hope it looks as good as that one...
Good luck & HAppy hunting~

:o Cruising through the messages and saw your picture of the medal. It struck a chord and after looking through my stash for the year I located the exact same medal which I found in May buried about 4" behind home plate at an old baseball field.
