Welcome to the 1700's club! It looks like a 1770-1775 King George III Halfpenny. Congrats on an Revolutionary War Era Coin.

Hi Fred,

If that was sitting on top of the ground near the river, you might have stumbled on the vicinity of an old mill site--I'd check the area around where you found the coin. Problem with rivers is you may also start digging aluminum cans at 12". Congrats on the KG III so early in your detecting career! :thumbsup:
 

Lucky dog, :occasion14: My oldest 1831, the area was settled in 1818. Don't know if I'll ever get in the 1700's club hunting local.
