Hello Team,

I found some large specimens that have all kinds of different veins running all over. Its nothing like I have seen before. The place its from is one of the biggest silver producers in the world or so i'm told. I just don't know what type of rock, quartz or crystals its made of. and how to process it. I do see a lot of silver and chipped some off and crushed it. My magnet did not pick up the silver looking bits. I don't see any large sections of gold or silver showing and don't want to hand crush 100# of this rock(s)

Any Idea of what it is and is it worth the time if I'm only seeing small flakes or silver and even less gold. ( with out busting into it more)

Thanks in advance.

The veins look a bit like common opal, and the brown looks like flint to me, neat rock.

I agree with fuss that looks like common opal, I'd go back to that spot and look for fire "var precious opal"!
Also if you were able to crush the silver looking stuff it's not silver, silver is a metal and it will smash, flatten not crush to little bits. Sweet find:icon_thumleft:

Thanks Fuss and Steve,

Here is a photo of what it looks like inside broke apart. Also there are vary thin lines of clear crystal looking vains running all over the sample. And the brown rock is hard ( hit with my hammer you get a nice spark.)

Use a short wave uv light on that, if it turns super fluorescent green like kryptonite you have hyalite opal there, if not its chalcedony.

Ok Steve I will get a UV light. I have another rock from the same place that had a blueish purple glow to it in the sunlight. I will check that one out and see what it looks like.

Here is were the rock came from.

Coo find I was hoping that it was gold

Hello A2, And all others,

This is the rock face that large rock came from. I'm not a hard rock miner, but i did pan out some dirt below it. ( Only black sands and quartz,) The rock face is on a 45deg road so most of the gold or other stuff have washed down the hill. This is a new road that was cut thru the hills. Attached are some photos. I'm not sure how to attack it as the rock is hard. You can see the veins and rust in the rock. ( the cut has only been open for 4 weeks so I did not expect to see much weathering)

Please let me know what you think. ( I did order a rock hammer, but hoping not to need it. Ha Ha)

Scott

Could you take a closer picture of the blue mineral and in bright sunlight and from different angles, that looks like blue opal to me and very pretty color of blue at that, almost a blue gem silica color, somewhat valuable even if it doesn't have fire.

Will Do Steve, I have a rock hammer coming today so i can dig in to the hill. ( Hard hat On. he he) I do see a lot of the blue in the rocks, but its just a thin layer on the outside. I will get more photos this weekend. Thank for the help. Also I did not have a U.V. light .( tried to use my bug zapper but I'm not sure if its a U.V. light. It did not show color)

Cheers

No you'll need a Short Wave uv light to see if its hyalite opal, try and clean off areas that look like opal, as best you can and look for play of colors in sunlight, google images of "rough precious opal and rough precious boulder opal" so you will know what you are looking for, even watch YouTube videos of people mining opal, that will help you also. We have blue opal here in southern Arizona, there's a claim outside or near Tucson I believe. I'd rather find precious opal than silver so keep your eye out for it! Drives me crazy that fire agate "gem quality "is actually more rare than emeralds or diamonds but isn't very valuable unfortunately, that's why I wish it was a precious opal spot I found rather than a fire agate spot, I would of retired and just prospected and cut it. Good luck Scott, I really hope you score!:icon_thumleft:

There are all kinds of different rock and gems were i'm at. I'm located 2,000m up in central Mexico. ( the worlds hot spot for silver) I'm not sure about Opals this high up? If you have google V.R. I can send you the spots I know and maybe you can point out were to look. Thanks for all the great info.

Steve, I stand corrected. From the web is says. : ''Fire opal is mined in the Mexican states of Quéretaro, Hidalgo, Guerrero, Michoacan, Julisio, Chihuahua and San Luis Potosi. The most important mines are located in Quéretaro. Fire opal was discovered there in 1835 and some of the mines are still producing today.'' I live right in the center of this area.

Hi Steve, I was just informed that there are small towns in my area that have small shops that sell Gem stones. As a Gringo I can't go there but i can send one of the persons that work for me there. I just need to know what to look for. ( type, Color and general info) If you have any photos to send I will have them look for the right ones. From what I was told they sell them cheap. ( The orange ones for $2.00)

Let me Know

Orange gems from Mexico hmm let's see, probably orange fire opal or orange sphalerite would be your best bet for valuable stones, maybe nice orange gemmy garnets if they are good sized. Be careful, being a gringo they might try to sell you a fake but I'd take a chance on loosing two bucks just to see...
Google gemstones mined in your area, wherever you are at, then just google rough images of those stones.
Me I love gemstones, I'd take a chance and send a guy in with ten bucks and tell him to buy five different types just to see ya know, but that's just me, losing ten bucks to see if I got a awesome new connection is no worse than spending ten bucks on gas driving to the middle of nowhere prospecting and striking out.
Steve.

Thanks Mate, This is how come i'm sending some one to get them. Its when a gringo shows up the prices go up and the chance of getting ripped do too. I was on google but there are so many under the name Mexican fire Opel. So i'm not sure what the best gems to buy are. If you can send any photos of raw gem stones I will mail you some for your help.

Cheers

No need to send me anything, if losing ten bucks wouldn't bother you like it wouldn't me just send in the troop and see what he comes back with, just tell your guy you dont want quartz or glass or plastic lol. See if he has fire opal or anything translucent and colorful, then post the pics on here and we'll see if I get really jealous lol..j/k
Steve.
