I have been working a creek that leads to a fairly large hill. The creek narrows and there is a lot of poison oak and as it climbs the hillside there are lots of tough areas to navigate. Especially when you bring you're Bulldog with you when you hunt. Ha Ha! This particular site is highly known and has been worked.

After about 7 hours of hiking the creek and on my way back my dog was fairly worn out so I decided to take a break. As i sat there I looked over to the side of the creek on the bank and there was this large boulder but noticed it had a flat bottom. I read here on the site that a lot of mortars people find are upside down. So I turned it over and wallah. The bowl is not very deep but it is definitely apparent.

Thanks. Yeah it's a tough one to get down its about a mile up a creek into the hill. However there is a cow trail that runs along the creek. That may be the route.

Don't come across a find like that everyday. Very neat. I agree would find some way to get it home. Be careful with your back, looks pretty heavy. Gl

If the area isnt to rocky and kinda flat take a sturdy piece of plastic and put it on it and then drag it out. Hopefully it wont tare a hole in it by a loose rock. Plastic will slide easy over leaves.

In my earlier artifact hunting years I thought this big mama jama was a big mortar. I found it on a Creekside in W.VA.. I hauled it for a couple hundred yards to the truck but was younger and healthier , thing would probably break my back now. Turned out it wasn't what I was hoping it was it is lacking them swirl marks. So now it is a flower garden ornament with water standing in it. I think what you found is the real deal looking at thows swirl marks. IMG_0150.JPG

Need better pictures, right now I just see a rock with a hole. Seen hundreds of those in rocks in the creeks of Missouri I walked for 20 years...

That may be the way to go. Thanks for the advice. It weighs about 80 pounds or more.

Right now it is next to a big oak tree. Its second resting spot in the last 2 days about half way down the creek. It will be a lesson learned if it is not a mortar but at least one heck of a work out. I may be using Rocks Idea my back is killing me. I will take some more pics when I can.

Thanks for posting the pic. For me it's an eye opener. Half of my artifacts are artinonfacts with the help here with others pointing me in the right direction.

i'm not sure what you mean by swirl marks, unless you're expecting the depression was created by running water, instead of by pecking or usage. Because, otherwise, that sure as heck looks like a nice trail side mortar to me.....

It does look like it but I think this one I have is just natural, like you mentioned from running water. Just going by examples I have seen,it doesn't seem to show the signs of pecking /grinding. I'll post a dry pic of it later on.

Swirl marks would be inside the hole from the grinding done by the natives..
