Is it thin...crumpled up?Like a "Sheet"?

Yes it is thin...it is crupled up on the upper edge in the pic and has cuts round the outside

We found a few round balls and some melted round the same area but this looked like it was cut to fit around something

As a guess: homemade pail lid, flue cover or pipe cap?

Nothing worse than having a full milk pail and something blowing or falling in.

Hard to say from the pic,but during the 1850's Tea came in a sheet lead lined box.Its quite common to dig.....
