Found this button very recently at a Colonial site in eastern Virginia. The site dates from 1685 to the 1790's, The button is 25mm and Pewter with large shank. Features a horse and rider on the front. Has anyone come across anything similar? Would this button have any kind of Military association or just a early sportsman button? Any thoughts on it are appreciated, thank you.

Congrats on the pewter button, it's in great shape.

Very nice find!

Cool button. Due to the shank, it looks colonial made. That being said it resembles some of the cavalry militia buttons of the revolution, but the detaii is lacking so a positive ID may not be possible. What else was found with it may tell the tale.

Is it just me, or does that look like a woman and not a man on the horse?

The figure appears to be wearing a dress and has a bosom and bun.

That button is awesome.

Very interesting and old button. Rarely are pewter buttons recovered so well preserved. Terrific find!

All other relics recovered so far are late 1600's through late 1700's

Nice button...and different! :icon_thumright:

Very cool button- Congrats!

Nice button and chunky loop. Good luck with ID.

Looks like he is holding a sword over his head and the motif and construction indicate a Rev War era dragoon button, possibly from a militia unit like Smokey says.
