large cents

If it is just a common date most of them will go between 12.00 and 20.00.

if you were to take it to a dealer,, would they give you ag or g4 ??

I guess I am a little confused, AG or G would be the condition. What you get for it would depend on the condition.

It depends on the condition what it would grade at. If it isn't g-4 you won't get g-4 grading.

I've added a pic of an 1853 I found this year. It's better than g-4 to in my opinion.

Same for the 1832.

In dug condition, they'll get you a much lower price than the price for their actual grade. A rare variety or low mintage may hold some value in dug condition though, but I would imagine that most of the common-date large cents would probably get about 5-8 bucks apiece in dug condition. A good way to find out is to see what the winning bids for dug common LC's are on e-bay.

i guess i'm just curious if anyone's ever tried to sell one to a dealer,, i brought a key date indian in once to ask what he thought... he basically told me it was way too pitted,, i couldn't see it with my loop, he said it was on the inside,, makes no sense to me, anyone have any luck at all selling copper coins of any type ??

I have always had bad luck trying to get a decent price from a dealer, regardless of wether it was dug or not.

My coins have always graded lower(in their opinion) than they truly are. I am really honest with myself about the grades of my coins, using Photograde and such. I haven't met a dealer that will give you what the coin is actually worth because they have to turn it around to make their profit.

When I see identical coins in their cases that are graded higher than what they claim mine are, I just take my stuff and leave. I don't even bother with dealers anymore. It is insulting to me when they offer me $15 for a honest $45 coin. Your better off advertising to collectors themselves.

Good luck!

thanx,, 1/3 was about the same i was offered.. i've been dealing with this guy since i started tectin, to get a relationship going in case i found a coin that would get a good number.. i guess i shouldn't have expected any more than that....

If you find one you think is rare or key date send it in and have it graded..that way when/if you try and sell it they can not undergrade.
I am assuming here, you are talking something worth a good deal of money,so having it graded would be an investment.
also unless you have xray vision you can not tell what a coin is like on the inside...
