Went out with Skunemonk, Goingdown, and Earthworks for a Sunday hunt at the old Rev War site...we had a good day. This is a site that has produced 1803 large cent recently and 8 mid-1900 silver along the creek in the last visit alone. So we start searching along the creek and I hit a nice 52 Rosie within about 15 min...then Skunemonk gets a Merc and a silver Washington quarter, then I got a Merc, so the silver was flowing at the site. Earthworks got a couple of Indians, 1890 and something else, Goingdown, he can say, he has the best story of
a cool find he should post on his own...so it was hours later and we were heading to the car but I was still thinking there's stuff on the way, as that's when you hit stuff end of day...these guys all have their detectors off and are giving me crap about continuing and I'm noticing the dirt road is much lower than the field above, meaning the road is really old because it was worn away lower than the field over many years...so I'm telling me the theory and then I get this great signal and they are busting my chops watching me dig,,,and BANG...I posterized them, like a slam dunk over their heads in basketball...pulled out a large cent right in front of their faces (no date and degraded, but still can see the wreath)...you never saw three detectors come off shoulders and turned on so quickly...then we all searched another hour and I found a three ringer bullet, as did Skunemonk and he also found a nice musketball unfired. A great day all in all. Photos below...Earthworks says it's a rouge holder because that's what he cleaned out of it. I thought it was a kane top, but I gather he is right since that is what he saw inside. -- more photos below my post -- from Earthworks

WTG on the great finds !!!!! HH

Great finds, Bergie. It does look to be something other than a makeup case. Can't see how a lid would have worked. I think Earthworks should have to post a pic of him wearing the rouge so we can all be sure he's telling the truth.

you mean it wasnt too cold for Gary! haha! looks like once again, you guys have lined up an awesome spot! that cane top/ rouge holder thing is very cool. i would guess no later than the 20s or so, maybe as early as the 1890s! very very cool! congrats!

Thanks, and Earthworks thanks for the extra photos -- put on some of that rouge too...

Outstanding finds man ! the silver cane top (might be part of a vanity set) can be straightened out , dent

removed - a smooth wooden dapping punch can be fashioned easily from hardwood dowel , the piece can

then be inverted on some leather and a hammer gently applied to the dowel to bring the silver back to its

original form. Argentium.

That was a great hunt! i love the thimble. Looks like opals on the side!

Nice finds! I have also found one of those silver lids from a jar from a matching Victorian vanity set.

That sure is a great looking Thimble, if there was a way to clean that up and preserve it , DO IT! You don't see them like that too often! Sounds like a great mixture of finds in that area.

Nice finds Bergie. That thimble is going to be nice in a display. It's very cool. 8)
