I'm a newbie so if this post is off-the-mark be gentle.....

Found this ?coin? in a park near ball diamond in area where I found some 50's wheats, but nothing older. It was 4-6 inches deep. After finding this I put it in my "worthless but interesting" collection of finds and thought no more of it until I saw some old pics of large cents. Size is compelling, but the item pictured here is very smooth - I can't find a mark of any kind on it; it has the heft of a coin, though, and sounds like a coin when dropped onto a hard surface.

I can't imagine a coin could be perfectly worn smooth, but would be eternally depressed if I threw out a piece of history before investigating further. Anyone have an idea if this is a large cent, or a large waste of time?

Thanks all!

Hmmmm, it looks like a large copper coin but, could be a button too.

Need to see better resized pics.

I'll help you do it if you want to learn.

Oh, and it's never a waste of time.

Does it stick to a magnet?

If so, then it could be a punch out from a electrical junction box.

I dug a few of those when I was starting out.

Oh yeah, and welcome to Tnet :icon_thumleft:

It looks like it's copper and could be a well worn colonial copper or a large cent. If you can see a mark that looks like solder in the middle on either side it's prabably a flat button though. I would bet on a copper coin of some kind though. Magnets won't stick to large cents because they are copper.

I found the exact same thing last year at an old homesite about 4 inches deep.

All,

:newbie:

As the newbie, let me first thank whomever helped me with formatting my pics - knew they were too big after I posted but couldn't figure out how to change - will work on that to make my future posts more appealing.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. A few replies to your comments:

I too thought this might be a button but there is absolutely no sign of a broken loop on either side.

No magnet is sticking to this, either.

I took this coin back out and have held it up to the light and believe I can see some faint outline of images - bust on one side, ornate markings on the other... and one clear "A" along the edge. I hadn't seen any of this before, so I will spend some time on some colonial coin / large copper websites to see if I can find a coin that matches the faint images I see.

Y'all have been great - thanks for the assist.
