I was looking through some of my older stuff and found this. At first I thought it was a large flat button but, after closer examination I could make out a womans bust facing right. On the back is a wreath and One Cent. I am posting a poor picture of the front and will try to get a better one tomorrow. I could not get a good enough shot of the back to post.
Any tips on getting the coin to show up better?

Re: Large Cent?

Looks like a draped bust large cent, or a liberty cap large cent to me. I think I see the letter L in liberty right to the left of the bust.:icon_thumright:

Re: Large Cent?

Hard to tell which type it is but from what can be seen it was made between 1793 & 1808.

I rub a little baby powder on mine real gentle. The powder will help some of the detail to pop out.

I'll give that a try tomorrow, if I get time. I may have to make an out of town trip due to an illness in my wife's family.

Re: Large Cent?

Liberty Cap Cent between 1793 and 1796. Try long soaking in olive oil to clean some of the debris/corrosion from it. Very porous, which reduces the value a lot.

I can see a cap just to the left and under the L of LIBERTY. Nearly a million pieces minted in 1794. Truly a piece of history!

I hope this is the case as it will be my first coin from the 1700s. ;D

I have been soaking this coin for almost 18 hours now. How long should I let it soak and what else do I do to it after soaking?

Re: Large Cent More Pics

Well, I took the coin out of the Olive and patted it dry with a paper towel.
I took pics of the front and back and I scanned the front and back as well. Here are the results.

I'm going to catch flak from the numismatic community, but try scrubbing the surface with olive oil and a toothbrush. A little more corrosion may come off. It may take some time, but be gentle, if possible.

I can see the faint outline of a cap underneath the L of LIBERTY, as well as a portion of the staff the cap is sitting on to the right of Liberty's bust. This was the symbol for a free man of the time, and one who was allowed to vote in elections.

I can't make out a date. Pretty sure of the designation, though.

Re: Large Cent More Pics

Do you think it could be a 1797? I think I see a 7 in the date area and it looks too far to the right to be the first seven ???

Re: Large Cent More Pics

It may be my imagination or just a desire to have a coin from the 1700s but, when I look at it through a magnifying glass at just the right angle I believe I see "97". I can definitely see "ONE CENT" in the middle of a wreath on the reverse.
The next time we have a coin show (once a year, in April!) here I will take it and see if the pros can tell me more.

Re: Large Cent More Pics

I still see a cap above Liberty's hair left. That would *prove* it must be an earlier cent than 1797. There should also be the end of a staff that the cap was carried on near Liberty's base right, but the coin is too corroded for me to make that out.

If you are desperate enough to get more detail out of this coin, and don't mind degrading it further, lightly rub it with steel wool is a possibility. The question of what type of early large cent still seems to present. Steel is stronger than copper, and will abrade the surface. The coin is already is pretty poor condition. In my opinion you likely won't damage it further than it already is, but THAT IS JUST MY OPINION. Rubbing with steel wool will likely highlight any high spots still remaining. The cap is one raise surface that should be brought out, as well as possibly more of the date and LIBERTY.

The cap is not visible to my eye in the other photos you have taken: may be the lighting in the photos.

Re: Large Cent More Pics

I dusted the coin with baby powder and here are the results. I still can't see a date! And, how do I clean the powder off?

Draped Bust Large Cents tend to be fairly common in that condition, I have a few of them that I can not get a readable date from. Be happy you found one. I log them when dateless as a 1796-1807..........
