Today , before the heavy wind and rain hit here on the Vineyard I got out for a few hours to a new field that had produced a King George a few days ago. So I returned to the part of the field that was flat and appered to have been the garden area of the small farm. After a few passes I got a good hit at 6 inches and figured it was a coin when I saw the green copper circle ,well out popped this sleigh bell. It's cast and has a pretty design on it and what appears to be a 2 or a 6 ? on it ? About 10 ft from the bell find I got another strong hit that was indicating 8 inches . I dug a deep plug and after a few more scoops I found this large cent. 1817 with 15 stars, it is in very good condition and with the dirt cleaned from it has great detail. About an hour later at the north end of the field I got a strong hit at only 2 inches , I figured a modern coin at that depth ? When i dug it and pulled this round object I though it was some sort of washer ? With the raised edge the dirt stayed firmly planted inside of it. With my water bottle I gently washed and worked the dirt away and was surprised to find that it was a King Goerge. Someone had hammered the edge so that it has a raised lip around it ? Anyone want to speculate why ? I can't pull a date off it ,but because of the raised lip protaecting the coin the details of the coin are quite nice. I'll be back to this site this week.
