I was digging the yard of a 96 year old woman who was born in the house. Her parents built it but I didn't get the date. Anyway, my wife and I spent 4 hours digging about 5lbs of nails, bolts and strange globs of metal before running into this. When I first dug it I was really excited because it was about 6 inches down and felt like a ring until I looked at it, it was pitch black when I dug it so I calmed down a bit. We took it home and I checked if it was magnetic, nope, so I got a bit more excited and tried cleaning it up. I soaked the ring in a very mild citric acid solution and surprisingly enough the black coating wiped right off after a few minutes. I'm almost wondering if it wasn't in a fire. So now I appear to have a copperish colored ring and upon further inspection my eyes start making out the faint outline of lettering on the inside. The S appears fairly clear to me followed by an I or T. The T of course would suit my theory, spelling STATE but I could be totally wrong. I have a relatively good photo of the ring but after attempting a shot of the inside with two different cameras this was the best I could do.

Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone found something like this before?
