White's XLT
What a day of hunting~~ My husband Mike and I went detecting at this old farm in the woods. The wind was blowing and it was definately cold! We knew that we would not be out for a long. We started wandering around in the woods with no plan. The area had an old fence line around the area along with ditches around the outside edge. The area looks like it may have been flooded at one time. There were a few trees that are older, and the rest are younger(about 50 years old). I started by finding an old car license plate (in pieces), bullets and shotgun shells.
Mike yelled for me to come over he had found a coin. So I slowly meandered over knowing he had to dig through all the roots first. When I got there he had me scan the hole, (first time I used relic mode on the xlt). It was a good reading of 74 at around 6 inches deep. He was digging more and had me scan it again, this time nothing but a blip(wasn't sure that it was a coin) but still pinpointed at 6 inches. The third time I scanned it, I did not get anything at all. Mike kept digging determined to get this target out of the ground. Finally I scanned and it was out of the ground and reading a beautiful 74. The detector screamed and pinpointed at half an inch. I knew at that point that it was a coin. When we moved the dirt we both looked at the large cent sitting there, Mike jumped up and started yelling....woo-hoo,,, :hello2: When I looked up he had his detector on his shoulder and said "Let's go, I'm cold..." I just looked at him and said "what about my coin? I haven't found one yet". This is where he became the expert, giving me advice on where to detect and what to dig! LOL, Of course I needed all the help that I could get, because I did not locate any coins that day! We are only able to make out the first two numbers and they are 17??. We will be going back to this area again!!!

Hi,

I think that's a Draped Bust type 1796-1807. The first image is off the web and I outlined the bust. Second is a half/half combination image of your coin registered to the first image (done on Google Earth). The third picture is your coin with the yellow bust outline. Lastly, I think you have an 1807 because your coin seems to have the top of the 7 still intact. I don't think it's a Liberty Cap type because the bust is more off center (to the right) than your coin is.

Nice find!

Jim

Jim, that is amazing!! Thanks for going the extra steps and helping to determine what the coin is. We were disappointed that we were not able to get the coin cleaned anymore. So this information was great. Although I do have to figure out how you did that... :icon_scratch:... as I do have more coins that are the same way... Outlines but no dates...

My husband went back to the site and found a 1915 wheat penny. In one area there was a lot of junk. Old household junk such as the porcelain type wash basins, water buckets, etc.. We have found a lot of bullets and shotgun shells.

Thanks for the warm welcome and the help on the identification!!

Nice find & wow Jim, you sure did a nice job on identifying the coin! I'd get back to that spot & start diggin' every signal!
